Sampling of Students for the 2000 Assessment

Sampling of Students for the 2001 Assessment

In NAEP assessments, the school sampling process renders samples that include only one grade level at some schools, two grade levels at others, and all three grade levels (4, 8, and 12) at others.

For each school that was selected in the NAEP 2000 and 2001 assessment sample, NAEP staff provided school personnel with forms to list the names of the school's students in the grade or grades that had been selected. NAEP staff then sampled students for the assessments from these lists. A computer program indicated specific line numbers on the listing forms that corresponded with student names. Administration schedules were then created, listing the name of each selected student along with his or her school-provided demographic information.

In all NAEP assessments, the anonymity of students who participate is protected. Once an assessment session is completed, student names are detached from the administration schedules and given to school administrators.
