Sample Questions in Grade 4 Mathematics

Students' mathematical knowledge was assessed in each of the five content areas specified by the NAEP mathematics framework. The distribution of items among each content area differs by grade to reflect the knowledge and skills appropriate for each grade level. The questions that follow are only a few of the ones that were administered. To explore more questions, visit the NAEP Questions Tool.

Mathematics Grade 4 Multiple-Choice Sample Question

The sample question that follows is one of the questions used to measure fourth-graders’ performance in the content area of number properties and operations.

Description: Solve story problem involving addition and subtraction Question text: "The Ben Franklin Bridge was 75 years old in 2001. In what year was the bridge 50 years old? A) 1951, B) 1976, C) 1984, and D) 1986." The correct answer is B.

The percent of the Nation (all students) who chose each response is: A) 39, B) 36, C) 10, D) 14. 1 percent omitted this question. The percent of AI/AN students who chose each response is: A) 39, B) 31, C) 11, D) 17. 3 percent omitted this question.
NOTE: AI/AN = American Indian/Alaska Native. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding.

Thirty-one percent of AI/AN fourth-graders selected the correct answer (choice B).

Mathematics Grade 4 Multiple-Choice Sample Question

The sample question that follows is one of the questions used to measure fourth-graders’ performance in the content area of geometry.

Question text: The following graphics are shown: Figure A is a rectangle. Figure B is a shaded triangle. Figure C is a triangle. Figure D is a shaded rectangle. "Melisssa chose one of the figures above. The figure she chose was shaded. The figure she chose was not a triangle. Which figure did she choose? A) Figure A, B) Figure B, C) Figure C, D) Figure D."

The percent of the Nation (all students) who chose each response is: A) 5, B) 3, C) 1, D) 90. 1 omitted this question. The percent of AI/AN students who chose each response is: A) 6, B) 3, C) 3, D) 87. 1 omitted this question.
NOTE: AI/AN = American Indian/Alaska Native. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding.

Eighty-seven percent of AI/AN fourth-graders selected the correct answer (choice D), the shaded rectangle.

Mathematics Grade 4 Constructed-Response Sample Question

This sample question is used to measure fourth-graders’ performance in the content area of data analysis and probability. Student responses for this question were rated using a three-level scoring guide of "Correct," "Partial," and "Incorrect."

Question text: "There are 6 cubes of the same size in a jar. 2 cubes are yellow. 3 cubes are red. 1 cube is blue. Chuck is going to pick one cube without looking. Which color is he most likely to pick?” Student response: "red." Question text: "What is the probability of this color being picked?” Student response: "3 out of 6"

The percent of students who gave a "Correct" response is 22 percent, "Partial" is 67 percent, "Incorrect" is 10 percent, and 1 omitted this question. The percent of AI/AN students who gave a "Correct" response is 11, "Partial" is 70, "Incorrect" is 18, and 1 omitted this question.
NOTE: AI/AN = American Indian/Alaska Native. Detail may not sum to totals because a small percentage of responses that did not address the assessment task are not shown.

Eleven percent of AI/AN fourth-graders provided a "Correct" response.
