Spaces and Facilities
Table 7.11, The NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card, 1997 arts assessment. The spaces and facilities available in schools to teach the arts are good indicators of the level of commitment to arts education. This table presents information about the kinds of space resources available in the schools for the teaching of music. As shown in the table, 44 percent of students attended schools where music was taught in rooms dedicated to that subject, with a stage. Another 42 percent of students attended schools where music was taught in rooms dedicated to the subject, with no stage. Students who attended schools where music was taught in a room dedicated to music teaching with a stage had higher average Creating and Performing scores than did their peers who attended schools where music was taught on a stage with no room dedicated to music teaching. (Creating and Performing scores refer to scores for tasks in which students were asked to create and perform music.) Further, students who attended schools where music was taught in rooms dedicated to music teaching without a stage had higher average Performing scores than did their peers who attended schools where music was taught on a stage with no room dedicated to music teaching. The table shown here is Table 7.11 from Chapter 7 of the arts report card. View more tables featuring arts opportunity-to-learn data in Chapter 7 of the NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card.
